Virtual Newsstands: When Tagging is Good for a Chicago Neighborhood

Our experiment aims to expand readership and train future new media journalists by attaching news stories to underserved neighborhoods (those centered around areas with large concertrations of public housing) where people congregate, like laundromats, bus stops, grocery stores, using mobile phones. Patrons and pedestrians can sample and view unique local news in context.

Disadvantaged youth selected from local Chicago tutoring/mentoring programs will work with journalism students
to learn basic reporting skills and use of new location-based technologies installed on state of the art mobile
smartphones. Once they have acquired this knowledge, they will go back into their neighborhoods and write
original stories about issues relevant to their particular beat. Once approved by an editor, it will then be
published both online and in a mobile format accessible to the community via ordinary cellphone.

When a citizen is at a bus stop or local barbershop, they will see signs that simply direct them to either call
a number or send a text message to hear stories about their neighborhood.

It isn't innovative to recognize that mainstream media often overlooks inner city "information ghettos",
creating pockets of disenfranchisement. Nor is it innovative to help disadvantaged youth living in Chicago to
produce relevant, professional mixed-media stories about their neighborhood, though participants will get
training from local community-based journalism organizations and major universities. It is innovative to empower
these young people with cutting edge tools such as mobile smartphones to be able to produce their own articles,
photographs, and audiovisual content for a wider readership. Their families may not have computers or Internet,
but the cellphone is a familiar device in these communities. We think that producing site specific news stories
is a novel idea. To write about a robbery at its scene, for example, adds new challenges for the reporter and a
new kind of experience for the reader. To review a local band, in front of the place they perform and include a
soundclip; to address issues about a zoning changes at the site, include photos or interviews with the story are
other examples of what might be done in this new kind of news. See our illustration in the attachments for a
view of our "virtual newsstand" idea. Info is tagged to spaces and everyone has a cellphone these days.

Groupon launches with a free pizza from Motel Bar

To: "groupon@1god.otherinbox.com" <groupon@1god.otherinbox.com>

Hi folks,

We're pleased to announce that Groupon is live!

Check it out at http://www.getyourgroupon.com

Every day, Groupon features something great to do in Chicago
at a huge discount - but you only win the deal if enough people
sign up each day.  By promising a lot of sales to our partners,
we're able to get deals that you can't find anywhere else.

We're kicking things off this week with businesses at (or around)
600 W Chicago Ave. Today we have a great offer from our friends
at Motel Bar - 2 of their excellent pizzas for the price
of 1 - $13 - on any Tuesday, which also happens to be the day
they have $3 Goose Islands. So we're talking pizzas and beers
for you and a friend for less twenty bucks.  Only 25 people need
to join, and you'll get a coupon that you can use on a Tuesday
of your choosing in the next year.

We built Groupon for people like us.  We've lived in Chicago for
most of our lives, but when we get out of the house, we just head
to the same bar - or if we're feeling adventurous, maybe we'll
see a movie.

There's tons of stuff to do in this city, but we don't have time
to vet everything out, and don't want to risk blowing a
bunch of money on something that turns out to be lame.

That's why we built Groupon.  We find the stuff that's worth
doing, and offer it at at a price that makes it hard to say no.

Thanks - we hope you love it!

Andrew, Ken, Nick, Shawn, Joe, and the whole Groupon team

What's wrong with this press release?

Signing an update "Team OptIt" depersonalizes things. I'd rather see a real name and person attached to this news. Their website doesn't say much either about the people behind this company.

Opt It Moves Headquarters

Opt It, Inc. completed its relocation to its new corporate headquarters on September 15, 2008 to accommodate future growth and expansion of the company. Opt It is now located at 212 W. Superior in the River North area of Chicago just north of downtown.

Due to the great customer response of the Opt It Mobile product, expansion into a larger office was aligned with the company's strategic goals. Expansion will benefit our long term growth allowing us to hire additional resources to better serve our customers on a daily basis. In addition, it will improve the quality of our employees work environment fostering greater innovation in the mobile industry.

Previously located at 191 N. Wacker in the heart of downtown Chicago, Opt It has moved a few blocks north into the city's loft/warehouse district. This new loft space has flexible conference areas, improved facilities for collaboration and ample bandwidth for a growing software company.

Our recent growth is attributed to our dedicated customers who have worked with us during the past four years. We truly appreciate your business and the trust you put in us as your mobile experts. We look forward to bringing you the newest and most innovative products in the mobile industry that will allow you to drive your businesses forward.

This is a great achievement for Opt It and a sign of great things to come.

Announcing Drupal Camp Chicago, October 24th and 25th

Subject: [netsquared-17] Announcing Drupal Camp Chicago, October 24th and 25th
Date: Thu, 16 Oct 2008 13:10:04 -0400

Greetings, fellow Net Tuesday folks!

You are all invited to attend Drupal Camp Chicago, a get together for nonprofits, consultants, techies, non-techies, web communications folks, and anyone else curious about or interested in the Drupal content management system (CMS). Registration is just $20 for both days, which includes *very* good catering for four meals; we're not talking about the usual conference Subway platters here :)

http://drupalcampchicago.org

Why should you be curious?

The Drupal CMS is free, open source software that really taken off in the nonprofit sector in recent years. With projects ranging from free to hundreds of thousands of dollars, the platform really encompasses a wide range of applications. Several of the Net Tuesday regulars are Drupal users (or, in my case, nonprofit Drupal consultants), and it's gaining a great deal of visibility at nonprofit tech conferences around the world.

We're also planning a Code For a Cause event! Some of you will remember I and my buddies at the Chicago Technology Cooperative did a series of pro bono code sprints at the Flourish conference this Spring. Here's how it works:

1. We pick one, maybe two nonprofit technology projects that are currently underfunded, and could really benefit from a free pilot prototype or a basic website setup.

2. We assign experienced consultants from our staff to lead the project(s).

3. Prior to the event, we figure out exactly how much we're planning to cover during the event. Last Spring, for example, we built a mapping system for a directory of homeless shelters across Chicagoland, for the Chicago Coalition For the Homeless.

4. Over the course of the event, we encourage volunteers to drop in and watch what we're doing. The aim is create a useful, functional system over the two-day event, which can be demonstrated to attendees and handed over to the client organization afterwards. At the last event, we had a couple of dozen participants and several dozen observers; this is an excellent learning opportunity as well as a chance to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty.

Pimp-my-nonprofit organizations, get in touch with me if this is something you might be interested in benefiting from :)

Seating is limited, register now -

Harvest dinner Monday in Logan Square

Yup, it's me again, here to remind you that MONDAY is the Harvet Dinner.
It's going to be at the Stan Mansion on Kedize just north of Fullerton.
There will be a variety (12-ish) of local restaurants for the buffet,
including Kayla's, Rustik, Lula, Fonda del Mar and many others. It's going
to be tasty and fun, and proceeds go to the Logan Square Chamber, which
supports the farmer's market but also helps support/promote new and existing
business in the neighborhood.

35 bucks for adults, 10 bucks for kids, cash bar.
